Karen Simmons is a prominent advocate in the autism community, recognized for her extensive contributions to autism awareness and support. Her journey into this field began when her son was diagnosed with autism at two-and-a-half years old. Determined to provide better resources and support, she founded Autism Today in 1998, establishing the first global online information and resource center for autism.
Beyond her work with Autism Today, Karen has authored 14 books, including the Gold Medal-winning “The Official Autism 101 Manual,” and co-authored “Chicken Soup for the Soul: Children with Special Needs.” She has also organized over 73 conferences, notably the World Autism Summit, aiming to enhance understanding and support for individuals with autism and neurodiversity worldwide.
Karen’s diverse background includes serving in the U.S. Air Force and working as a gemologist. As a mother of seven children, two of whom are neurodiverse, she brings personal insight and dedication to her advocacy efforts. Her mission continues to focus on empowering those affected by autism and neurodiversity, highlighting their strengths and talents to foster a more inclusive society.
